Spurs ends fourth with scything win

- By GAVIN VAN ROOYEN

ATLANTIC Spurs midfield talisman Darryl Willard was the star of the show on Tuesday evening at the North End stadium as his side secured fourth place.

Willard’s double strike and one assist earned his side a comprehensive 4-1 win against Parkside United thus securing Spurs fourth spot as the curtain came down on the East London Central Local Football Association premier league season.

Eldrich Johannes and Graham Morrow added the other goals.

It was heartbreak for last season’s champions Seagulls who had to be contend with fifth place even though they completed their programme with a resounding 6-1 win against Star of India on Sunday.

East London Central second Anniversary Tournament champions Pride of India ended sixth while Premier Top 8 champions Star of India dropped to seventh place and Shiloh rounded off the Top 8.

Parkridge-based Swaraj finished as runners-up thus securing their best position in 12 years while Riverside had to settle with a third place finish.

The East London Central Premier League season was however dominated by the impressive Parkside Sporting who wrapped up their third title this season to add to the Gijima Cup and the Seagulls 95th Anniversary Knockout Championship trophy. In total Sporting have now won a record seven premier titles in two seasons.

After a good start to the season Parkside United faltered midway through, ending ninth, while Gijima Cup runners-up Buffalo City Soccer School finished 10th.

It was a disappointing season for both Young Lions (13th) and Cambridge United (14th), and Brothers of Peace (11th) and Conquerors (12th) know that they are far better outfits than what their final log positions indicate. Pefferville United were relegated to the first division after a nightmare debut in the Premier League.

Manchester and Schillatchi’s are the sides that have been promoted to the top flight.
