Good day for DD fun run

- By BOB NORRIS

THE Daily Dispatch Windmill Fun Run is one of, or quite possibly, the oldest existing fun run in South Africa and it has survived much change in society, from sports to socio-economic conditions and political transformation.

Predicted conditions tomorrow are ideal for running or walking with no more than a gentle breeze after yesterday’s gale force winds.

Temperatures should be a mild 15° to 19°C. It will remain dry.

The Daily Dispatch Run will again boast a huge field, and a microcosm of the region’s human potential will be on display as thousands wend their way down to East London’s Orient Beach to tackle either the 8km or 4km by running, walking or in a wheelchair. Indeed many a child has “participated” in their first run in a push chair and then gone on to do the event in their own right, sometimes pushing their own offspring the length of the Esplanade and more.

The 4km event is more of a social outing, while the 8km event is a lot more serious, with runners and walkers of all abilities giving the distance their best shot and looking to improve times.

While the 4km is virtually dead flat, the 8km has a fast start later tempered by a tough climb in two parts.

Daughters will be out to challenge mothers, sons their fathers and work colleagues one another. The little races within the overall picture of things are often the most interesting to watch.

Serious athletes will be out in force and East Londoners can expect stern competition from visiting athletes.

Runners and walkers are encouraged to collect their race tag, T-shirts and goodie bag between 9am and 1pm today at the Orient Beach offices.
