Zulu to move over to Chiefs

- By MARK GLEESON

CHIPPA United striker David Zulu will move to Kaizer Chiefs in January, officials from both clubs have confirmed.

A deal to sign last season’s top scorer in the National First Division was concluded some weeks ago between the clubs and Zulu will be registered for his new team on December 15 but stay with the Port Elizabeth-based outfit until the end of this year, they said on condition of anonymity.

Chiefs are one of four clubs with a special dispensation to register players before the January transfer window opens so that they can also register them for next year’s African Champions League.

Zulu will add to a Chiefs attack that has come under criticism for missing several good chances in recent games.

Coach Stuart Baxter said last week after the draw with Mamelodi Sundowns that the club were in the market for “two of three” players in the January transfer window as they seek to strengthen their squad.

Zulu’s move presents a major windfall for Chippa who signed Zulu at the end of last season from Black Leopards on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

In his six months with Chippa, Zulu has won a Bafana Bafana call-up, although before yesterday’s game against the Ivory Coast he not won a cap, and scored five league goals this season.

The 28-year-old from Lenyenye in Limpopo province is a late bloomer in the game, having made his Premier Soccer League debut in 2012 for Black Leopards, also participating in the African Confederation Cup with the club.

Last season he scored 16 goals for Leopards to finish the top marksman in the NFD but his club were not promoted. Injury kept Zulu out of the post-season play-offs and he has had several knocks since, notably on Wednesday when he was taken off early in Chippa’s 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic after suffering a knee injury.
