Killer held for mom’s rape

Son had completed parole after wife murder and sexual assault

- By BONGANI FUZILE

ACONVICTED murderer who had served prison time for sexually assaulting and killing his wife was arrested at the weekend and charged with raping his 85-year-old mother.

The incident reportedly took place near Kidd’s Beach outside East London on Saturday night.

The man, 57, is said to have arrived at his mother’s two-room home in Ncera Village 2.

The frail woman was alone and although she tried to fight her son off he overpowered her, said police.

East London spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed the charge.

She said since the man’s conviction for murder he had been released on parole and completed the term. But she could not say when the murder took place, when the suspect had been released from prison or when his parole period had ended.

“We can confirm that a relative of the woman was arrested by police on Sunday. The victim, frail as she is, tried to fight the rapist off but she was overpowered,” said Mqala.

“We can confirm that the man was previously arrested for sexual assault and the murder of his wife.

“After serving time for that murder he was released on parole but he finished that before allegedly committing this recent incident.”

The victim’s granddaughter, 23, said her grandmother had told her neighbour what had happened and they in turn had called the police.

“She is frail and because of her age she is not well at all.

“We always try our best to protect her. What if our grandmother dies because of this?”

She said her grandmother was battling to come to terms with what had happened to her. “She’s scared. She just can’t cope with it.”

Mqala said the elderly woman had been home alone at the time.

“We heard that the door was not locked. Police are investigating.”

Correctional services provincial spokesman Zama Feni said they would look into the matter.

“If a convict has been released on parole, we normally look at his parole information.

“If we find that he has committed a crime, we revoke that parole and that person is taken back to jail while the new case is in the court of law,” said Feni.

The man is due in the East London Magistrate’s Court today.

Due to the nature of the crime he cannot be identified. — dispatch.co.za
