Uncollected rubbish piling up in City
EAST London residents have voiced concern over the state of the city as piles of refuse have not been collected in the past week.
Residents this week said their appeals to Buffalo City Metro (BCM) to do their duty and pick up rubbish in various suburbs had been ignored.
A response to questions sent to BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese had not been received at the time of writing yesterday.
“We do not know what is happening now because the last time they collected was last week and now black bags are beginning to pile up again causing flies and just a general untidiness,” Sabelo Nqweniso, a resident in Southernwood said.
He said it was worse when it got windy because then the rubbish was scattered around.
Nqweniso said he was concerned about the health risks of living with uncollected waste.
“What really upsets me is the fact that we pay BCM for this service which we still do not get,” he said.
Leticia Florence who lives in Beacon Bay said she had hoped the new mayor Alfred Mtsi would improve service delivery.
“Tuesday is our collection day and this week the trucks never came. That means we will go the entire weekend with the rubbish in our streets.
“That’s not ideal because with all the stray animals scratching, by Monday it will be a real mess,” said Florence.
Yesterday the Daily Dispatch took a drive around the CBD and Southernwood area and found piles of uncollected refuse bags on most street corners.
Some bins in the CBD appeared to have been deliberately toppled over as there were large amounts of rubbish scattered around.
John Kingon, chairman of the Gonubie Ratepayer’s Association said an official in the waste management department had told him the rubbish would be collected over the weekend. — ziphon@dispatch.
