Chippa to hit Downs with double whammy

- By VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

CHIPPA United’s top goalscorer Erick Chipeta says they plan to tighten up their defence initially and then launch a full-scale attack in the second half when they play Mamelodi Sundowns in a Telkom Knockout clash in Pretoria tonight.

The Zimbabwean centre-back has netted three goals for the Bay side so far this season and is currently Chippa’s leading goalscorer. He is only two goals away from the league’s leading striker Collins Mbesuma of Black Aces.

“Our strategy is to fight in the first 45 minutes and not concede any goals. Then in the second half we have to raise our game to get at least one goal in,” said Chipeta.

This week, the Chilli Boys put quite a bit more emphasis on taking penalties as if expecting a possible spotkick shootout.

Chipeta says he does not harbour plans at the moment of being the PSL’s top goalscorer this season. He says he would rather take it as it comes and concentrate on performing for Chippa today. He believes this time around Chippa will finish in the top eight and he says they were looking forward to an extended run in the Telkom Cup.

“The team is much different

this season. We have a young squad and a coach who believes in us. I think we are aiming for a top six finish this time around. The level right now is much different from that of last season.”

Meanwhile, former Sundowns player Thamsanqa Sangweni says they have been working hard and deserve silverware this season.

After spending last season on loan at Chippa, Sangweni now has signed a two-year contract with the Bay soccer team. “We are going to the Lucas Moripe Stadium to win. The team has been working hard this week and hopefully we will get good results,” said Sangweni.

“It will be a difficult game because they have good players and they have a lot of experience. I just need to work hard and communicate with my teammates because I know Sundowns, I have played there before.”
