Selborne stars obliterate chasing pack
IT HAS been a golden year for Selborne water polo’s first team, as they recently claimed their third major title of the year.
The team came out tops at the prestigious South African College School (Sacs) water polo tournament for the fourth time in their history.
It was an all-Eastern Cape affair in the final, played at Sacs in Cape Town, as Selborne came up against fierce provincial rivals Grey High School from Port Elizabeth.
In a typically close encounter where no quarter was given, Selborne sneaked a tight match 2-1, with both goals scored by Luke Johnson.
It sealed a very competitive unbeaten tournament, where Selborne drew twice along the way.
Selborne’s results saw them beat St Andrews 3-1, draw with Sacs 2-2, beat Parktown 6-0, beat Michaelhouse 7-1, beat St Stithians 6-5, beat Paul Roos 4-3, draw with DHS 4-4 and beat Northwood 5-1 – all in the pool stages.
They then went on to the quarterfinals, and managed to win a tight encounter against Pretoria Boys 4-3, following which they met Michaelhouse for the second time in the tournament in the semifinals, and triumphed 3-1.
After the tournament, Selborne keeper Ian Donovan was selected to the SA Schools water polo team to play against Australia and Zimbabwe in Cape Town next month.
The last time Selborne managed to claim the Sacs title was back in 1992, 1993 and 1994, when they dominated for three years straight.
“The highlight of the first team season was winning the Sacs tournament for the first time in 21 years,” said Selborne first team coach Stanislav Gospodinov.
This title now adds to the other two that Selborne claimed earlier this year, the Grey Bloem Itec tournament and the Vides tournament, which Selborne hosted.
