Police probe death of UFH student

EASTERN Cape police are investigat­ing the death of a 24-year-old university student found dead with head injuries outside student residences in Alice at the weekend.

The agricultur­al science student at the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Mpilo Qeja, died after he allegedly fell from the residence where he was staying.

Eastern Cape police spokesman Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni confirmed the incident, saying an investigat­ion was underway.

“Alice police have opened an inquest after a male student was found dead with an injury in the head on Sunday 17 April 2016 at about 2.30am at the University Fort Hare residence in Alice,” said Tonjeni.

Tonjeni said no one had been arrested in connection with the case.

“The police would like to encourage anyone with informatio­n that could assist in the speedy finalisati­on of the investigat­ion to contact the investigat­ing officers or Alice police detectives. All the informatio­n will be treated confidenti­ally,” said Tonjeni.

Relatives, students and friends of the deceased left messages on the deceased’s Facebook page.

A friend and relative, Inga Nande Qeja, said: “This week has been a rollercoas­ter ride. I really didn’t expect this one. Losing a brother, friend and a future business partner.

“Mpilo I feel like crying when I think about you. It was just too early. You were a real bold man, always there for my family in any situation. As young as you are but a big tree has fallen big loss for Mboks location and Qeja family.”

Africa Zamuxolo Sigodi said: “Today I have lost a friend and a brother. Losing you, it’s like losing an arm that will never be replaced, will always remember the memories we had … R.I.P mhlobo wam ndevu, mfengu, Mpilo Qeja.”

Zandile Lee Omuhle Jara said she was heartbroke­n too. “I’m lost for words. I’m even still confused how this could happen, he was what I call a real man. We all have lost a good man I’m still in tears R.I.P Vundle you will be missed,” she said.

Today, hundreds of students are expected to hold a memorial service for Qeja at the institutio­n’s Alice campus.

UFH spokeswoma­n Zintle Filtane could not be reached for comment at the time of writing yesterday.
