Learner driver creates own drive-through
STEERS restaurant in Grahamstown remains closed after a learner driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator of her luxury German sedan sending the vehicle crashing through a glass window.
Restaurant manager Thozama Nkawu said the incident occurred on Sunday at 2pm when there were a handful of customers in the eating area.
She said the unidentified driver was trying to park in front of the restaurant when the vehicle came crashing into the store.
“The car smashed the glass window, then two tables and was stopped by the counter. Fortunately there was no one queuing in front of the counter.
“Our cashiers who had seen the car coming jumped the counter and fled.”
Nkawu said when the car hit the counter the tills fell on the car.
“The counter cracked and some of our ice cream making machines and other equipment was damaged by the accident,” she said, adding the cost of the damages would run into thousands.
Nkawu said the restaurant catered mostly for Rhodes University students who now had to travel an extra 2km to access another Steers in the city.
Commenting on the incident Grahamstown police spokesman Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said: “Police were called and on arrival they found that a vehicle had crashed into Steers.
“No one was injured or killed in the incident and both parties – business owner and vehicle driver – agreed to settle the matter privately.”
Nkawu said they were working around the clock to have the restaurant up and running again. —
