SuperSport offload five to Europe’s grand elite

- By MARC STRYDOM

SUPERSPORT United have five more youth players going on trial in Europe following last week’s signing of 16year-old Jake Aresti by PEC Zwolle in Holland‚ says Matsatsantsa chief executive Stan Matthews.

Matthews said these included the son of former SuperSport striker Patrick Mayo‚ Khanyisa Mayo‚ at Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

Left-wing Mayo, 17, won Player of the Tournament and the Golden Boot playing for the SA U20 side at the Durban International U19 Tournament earlier this month‚ and played in the Fifa U17 World Cup in Chile last year.

“I think it’s awesome‚” Matthews said of Aresti being signed to the youth at Zwolle‚ the club where former SuperSport product Kamohelo Mokotjo starred in 2013-14.

“As we stand right now there are five of my players who have been invited to Europe on trial.

“[Midfielder] Zama Rambuwane is currently in Portugal and headed for Israel. He’s had two opportunities and he’s going to see which one appeals to him‚ and if it’s possible for him to go.

“If not‚ we have struck a deal with Pretoria University FC for him to play there‚ because we feel now is the time for him to have game time and not watch so much football.

“Jake Aresti has been offered something in Holland‚ and we’re very exited for him.

“Patrick Mayo’s son‚ Khanyisa Mayo‚ has been invited to Sporting Lisbon on trial.

“I expect that Khanyisa will have a real chance of going to Europe shortly. If not‚ we’ve spoken to him and his dad‚ and have a domestic fall-back plan for him.

“But I think it’s inevitable‚ with the talent that he has‚ that he’s going to land up abroad. As a club we’ll do everything we can to help him achieve that goal‚ even if it means he never kicks a ball for SuperSport United.

“We’ve got five kids from our academy who are going to be going on trials in the next three months. It’s a very exciting phase for us.” — TMG Digital
