Goliath returns home with side splitting humour

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

FOR the first time Mthatha comedy lovers will be treated to a night of fun when comedian Donovan Goliath performs at his homecoming event this Saturday.

The comedy show will take place at the Savoy Conference Centre at 7pm.

Goliath is currently based in Johannesburg and is one of the co-owners of the new, Goliath Comedy Club, the country’s premium comedy venue which hosts shows from Thursday night to Saturday.

Prior to his comedy days, Goliath was working in the advertising industry but left it to pursue a career in comedy after performing at Comedy Underground in Melville in September 2010, where the reaction inspired him to keep writing and performing.

Since then, he has appeared in numerous comedy festivals including Blacks Only, Soweto Comedy Festival, 99% Xhosa Comedy (East London), Zulu Comedy Corner (Durban), Jou Ma Se Comedy (Cape Town), MzansiFela Festival, AWEdnesday Comedy Jam, Tshwane Comedy Nights and at the National Arts Festival.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Goliath said he was excited to finally be hosting a show in his hometown.

“I’ve done shows in other parts of the Eastern Cape but not at home. I’ve always wanted to come home with a full on show, not just a small thing,” he said.

The former Zingisa Comprehensive High School pupil said he would be doing a lot of storytelling on the night.

“I will be telling a lot of stories about growing up in Mthatha and I do some impersonations as well. It is a clean show. Everyone can come,” he said.

Goliath said the event would also feature King William’s Town comedian T D Jokes, known to many as the first Eastern Cape Christian comedian. T D Jokes has performed in numerous shows such as 99% Xhosa Comedy.

Goliath said he could not wait to make his hometown people laugh. “It’s been a long time coming. I am coming home,” he said.

● Tickets for Goliath’s homecoming event cost R150 and are available at the Korner Lounge. For more information, contact; 082-670-8383. The event starts at 7pm. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
