Mini stars celebrated at seminar

- By ROSS ROCHE

THE annual KFC Mini Cricket provincial seminar was hosted by Border cricket last week at Buffalo Park.

The seminar is held each year to thank all the Border cricket volunteer coaches from all the regions and schools and to reward some for the fine work that they have been doing.

“I was more than happy, especially when I see the delegates, dignitaries and everyone who attended,” said KFC provincial coordinator Mnonopeli Mfenqe.

“So I am really happy with everything that happened and it has given me a lot to think about before we hold the next one.”

A number of speakers from Cricket South Africa, KFC and Border spoke to the coaches, explaining various strategies and some of the changes to expect in the coming year.

They also informed coaches how to run programmes and steps to follow in order to reach excellence in what they do.

Former ICC and CSA President Ray Mali was the guest speaker and he regaled guests with some tales from his youth, while also inspiring them and thanking them for their contributions to development cricket.

Two special guests at the event were Protea women’s player Ayabonga Khaka and Lilyfontein and Border women’s cricketer Ghandi Jafta, who both came through the mini cricket programme.

Some of the coaches on the night were recognised for their long service to the programme over the years. The provincial mini cricket coach of the year was also named, with Linda Chakacha picking up the award.

The next KFC Mini Cricket event will be the annual provincial festival which will be taking place at Buffalo Park on October 25.

Over 800 children from schools from around the Border region are expected to take part in the action, which will start at 11am and be finished by 3pm.
