‘Dance’ tuned up for winning push

- By VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

CHIPPA United attacking midfielder Menzi Masuku says the team will be out to redeem themselves when they play away to Highlands Pack in the Telkom Knockout on Friday.

The match will take place at Makhulong Stadium (kick-off 8pm).

Dan “Dance” Malesela’s troops will be out to get their confidence levels back on track after losing 1-0 to Golden Arrows in a league fixture at the weekend. The defeat was the club’s first PSL loss this season.

The 26-year-old Masuku, who joined the Port Elizabeth side at the start of the season from Orlando Pirates, says winning the Telkom would be great reward not for just the team but for the supporters as well.

“We are looking forward to win the Telkom,” said Masuku. “It would be very nice if we would win this one after losing out on the MTN8.

“In soccer there is always pressure. There is pressure to perform well for your own sake and even pressure to do well for the fans.

“So, we as a club want to make our fans happy and also grow the Chippa brand. It is important for us to redeem ourselves after losing to [Mamelodi Sundowns].”

The Chilli Boys missed out on an early chance to get their hands on silverware this season after being knocked out in the MTN8 semifinal by Sundowns.

Chippa’s journey in the TKO last season was cut short after they were beaten 2-0 by the Brazilians in the first round of the competition.

This time around the team will be expected to perform even better after their brave performance in the MTN8.

● Motherwell side Lion City remain unbeaten in the ABC Motsepe League this season after their 1-0 win against Morning Stars in a Bay derby at NU2 Stadium at the weekend.

City came back from a 1-1 draw against EC Bees in their previous fixture to beat struggling side Stars on Saturday.

The victory has moved City one place higher on the log. They are now sitting in sixth position with eight points from four games.

City have recorded two wins and two draws in the league so far.

Callies also made sure they hold on to their unbeaten run in the league after playing to a goalless draw against Matatiele Professionals.

This was the Bay side’s second draw in a league after playing to a 3-3 stalemate against league defending champion Tornado in a season opening fixture.

Meanwhile, Subs failed to come back from their 5-0 defeat against Professional and played to a 1-1 draw against Walter Sisulu University.

They take on EC Bees in their next league fixture.
