Familiar territory for new Cambridge head

- By BARBARA HOLLANDS

CAMBRIDGE High School senior deputy principal Spencer Welman has been appointed as the school’s new principal.

Welman, 56, said he was excited to take up his post after devoting his entire teaching life to Cambridge High, which he joined as an English teacher in 1984.

Having served as acting principal since the retirement of former head Grassy Buitendag in March, Welman officially took up his new appointment last Monday at the start of the fourth term. “It is very exciting,” said Welman, who obtained his BA degree majoring in English at UCT and followed it up with an HDE at the same university.

“I’ve given my whole teaching life to Cambridge High so it’s a very special school for me. I also feel humbled because this is a huge legacy to look after so I’m honoured by the trust and faith shown in me by the governing body.”

He became head of the school’s English department in 1989 and was appointed deputy principal in 1997 before his promotion to senior deputy principal in 2010.

“Cambridge has an ethos as a caring family school and I am deeply honoured to be the principal.

“Not only does it celebrate its diversity, but it reflects the broad social spectrum in our country.

“I will certainly build on the foundations of those who have gone before me and believe our school can be seen as a model of how to go into the future of South Africa.” — barbarah@disSPENCER patch.co.za
