Turning talent into a career

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

STANDARD Bank Jazz Artist of the year Siya Makuzeni is among the exciting artists set to showcase their work at this year’s edition of the annual Women Meets the Arts.

The gala event will start at 5pm on Saturday next week at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery in East London.

Travel Elite Management in partnership with the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, the Mirriam Makeba Institute for the Arts and the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC) are behind the event.

Organiser Carice-lee Wardle said after the positive response received last year they were inspired to continue. “The aim is to highlight and interrogate marketing and growth opportunities for entertainment and music along with their interrelated industries in the Eastern Cape.”

She said they wanted to create awareness about the many achievements and activities in the arts. “On the day of the event we will have workshops and an exhibition on careers in the arts for schoolchildren.

“Many children don’t know that there are lots of opportunities for them in the arts.

“We want to bridge information and training gaps while creating a platform for local businesses to invest in corporate social responsibility initiatives like this one,” she said.

Wardle said Siya Makuzeni would be the guest of honour.

“We will also have an exhibition of fine art from the Ann Bryant Art Gallery folk art sale,” she said.

Other performers include Nduduzo Makhathini, Odwa, Sive and a number of ECAVC artists. To book, contact travelelitetm@outlook.com —
