Highlands axe Freese, brings in Igesund

ALONGSIDE death and taxes being certainties in South African football, there is also the small matter of the coaching merry-go-round claiming a victim. The unfortunate Highlands Park mentor Allan Freese was haphazardly replaced by former Manning Rangers, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund yesterday morning.

If Highlands Park had a rank bad start to the season like Maritzburg United had last season, it would have been understandable.

While they were played off the park by SuperSport United on Sunday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, they were very competent and did not let themselves down.

Whether it is a questionable decision remains to be seen when they face Chippa United in their Telkom Knockout Cup last 16 clash at the Makhulong Stadium on Friday evening.

While Igesund’s career has come full circle with the club he once represented as a player, he is under no illusions as to how difficult his task will be.

“There’s not much time in football and coaches are aware of that but you have to start by crawling before you think of walking. We need to try to remain in the league and challenge for a good position,” said Igesund.
