Top drivers to battle for honours at Border 100

- By ROSS ROCHE

RACING action shifts into high gear today as the annual Border 100 speeds around the East London Grand Prix track.

The exciting inaugural Sasol Global Touring Car (GTC) Championship will be settled on the day and should be exciting to watch, while the regular Regional/Historic Club Saloons, the Club Motorcycles, Powersport Motorcycles and the Modified Saloons will also have their chance to show what they can do.

In the GTC champs it will be the sixth and final leg of the new event that has been raced all over the country during the year.

“It is the first time here in home without many risks.

Bonafede is anchored in second spot on the title leader board with four victories to his name, as well as six additional podium finishes.

Just 33 points separates third to sixth on the championship log and any of four drivers can claim the last championship podium this weekend.

Mathew Hodges in third place and Simon Moss in fourth are just 15 points apart and, with 100 available on the day, it should see them going all out. Johan Fourie and Hennie Groenewald are the other two drivers in the mix.

GTC Production, the class for front-wheel drive cars, has already crowned its taking champion in Daniel Rowe, who has dominated the class with 10 victories from 12 starts, while also securing second and third placings.

The Dunlop Regional Historic Championship will head into its decisive round, with Ryno Burger the leading contender.

In the final round of the Border Historic Racing Car Register Club Champs, four classes will be battled out, with Quentin Lessing favourite in class D, and Christopher Radloff, Wayne Botha and Brendan Smith the class C front runners. Brent Barnard will be aiming to impress in class B, and Chris Blom, Ryan Boy and Derek Boy should be leading class A.
