Get grooving to 80s rock

- By ZISANDA NKONKOBE

TAKE a journey back in time to the colourful 80s with Dramsoc’s new production Back to the 80s showing at the Alexander Playhouse in East London.

Director Jo Stemmet said the dance show features all the popular traits from the era starting with the set, the costumes, big hair and music.

East London band Arockalypse is set to rock the crowd with well-known sing-a-long tracks from Purple Rain, to music from the king of pop Michael Jackson.

The show, which opened to audiences last week Friday, is on every evening with a final showing on Saturday.

Stemmet said the music and choreography mix is suitable for audiences young and old alike.

Dramsoc is a committee which maintains the Alexander Playhouse and hosts regular shows.

“The show is based on an 80s theme but there are some minor modern traits to it as well,” Stemmet said.

“We feature a live band in the production and the reason for this is because a live band adds nice energy to the show.

“Arockalypse is a local band and they’ve been performing in East London for about three years.

“Audiences can also look forward to a thrilling performance by our saxophonist Mark Lynch.”

Stemmet said the choreography for this year’s show has been put together by world-class dancers which include the likes of Ashley Behrens, Chace Collett and Tayla Meecham.

The cast includes regulars and those familiar with Dramsoc will recognise cast members such as Marcel Corson and Byron Kreusch.

“This is a trip down a very bright and colourful memory lane filled with high-energy music, spectacular stagecraft and just plain fun,” Stemmet said.

Tickets for the event are available from Lee Gold Music at a cost of R90, with the audience urged to bring their own drinks and snacks.

Tickets for the Friday and Saturday shows cost R130 and include a meal. —
