Singing to feed families at Christmas

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

TO HELP those in need, upcoming gospel singer Awethu Banjwa will host a show tomorrow to raise funds for food parcels.

The “Power of Giving” gospel show is Banjwa’s way of helping those less fortunate, who won’t have anything for Christmas.

“There are so many people struggling in our communities and Christmas time is not exciting for them,” Banjwa said.

“They are always stressed and worried about where their next meal will come from.

“I have identified 20 families I would like to give food parcels to before Christmas,” he said.

The 20-year-old said he named the show “Power of Giving” because of “the wonderful thing when people give”.

“I live in a shack myself but I believe God wants to use me to change other peoples’ lives, not just my own.

“There are many child-headed homes and I want to reach out to such people. I am acting under God’s instructions,” he said.

The David Mama High School pupil said he started singing gospel music at the age of 11 in church.

“I realised the power that this music has on people. Gospel brings life and it gives people hope and I knew then that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he said.

Although he has been singing for years, Banjwa has not yet recorded an album.

“In August I hosted a gospel show that happens to help raise funds for my album but I am using some of those funds to host this show to help other people.

“I know that God will make a way for me to record my debut album when the time comes,” he said.

The former Mdantsane Gospel Choir member said his dream was to see lives transformed through the word of God and music.

“Music alone cannot do that. We need to help out where we can. I have nothing but I am an instrument and I want God to use me to bring change to our community,” he said.

Banjwa said anyone wanting to donate food parcels was welcome to make a stop at Orient Theatre tomorrow.
