Gifted pianist to enthral

-

EUROPEAN pianist Agnese Eglina will perform a solo recital of dance music and dance-inspired pieces through various times in music history, at the Stirling Auditorium in East London on Friday, February 17.

In South Africa to perform first in East London and then in Pretoria before jetting off to Zambia, Eglina’s programme, entitled Invitation to Dance, begins by linking the baroque dance suite of J S Bach with masterpieces of 20th century piano music by French composer Maurice Ravel.

From Ravel, Eglina introduces Spanish culture through the music of Enrique Granados and Isaac Albeniz.

A swift leap over the Atlantic allows her recital to conclude with the stirring George Gershwin Preludes and the passionate Argentinian Dances by Alberto Ginastera.

Eglina, who first began playing piano at the age of five, is a laureate of the highest music award in Latvia – The Grand Music Award – for outstanding ensemble work. She is considered one of the most prominent Latvian new pianists.

Having performed many concerts in Latvia as well as several recordings on Latvian Radio, she is also regularly on stage, either as an accompanist or solo artist in Estonia, Russia, Switzerland, Gibraltar, the US, Italy, Germany, Zambia and South Africa, although generation this will be her first time in East London.

Since 2012 she has been guest lecturer (lecturer of chamber ensemble) at Riga Teacher Training and Educational Management Academy in Latvia.

Tickets are R100 and can be booked at Stirling High School or bought at the door. — DDR
