Alphendale are track masters

- By ROSS ROCHE

ALPHENDALE High School were crowned champions of The Rodney Coriazin BAG Athletics tournament once again after a top weekend of athletics.

This is developmental athletics tournament that is staged every year and sees a number of local schools taking part including Alphendale, John Bisseker, Greenpoint, East London Science College and Althorpe College.

Alphendale’s win was their fifth year in a row and saw them retain the Rodney Coriazin floating trophy.

“It is fantastic to win the competition again, we really look forward to this event every year and we enjoy the friendly rivalry that the schools have,” said Alphendale head of sports Nigel Adams.

“Our athletes were on top form and did extremely well, with a number of great performances.”

Adams says the main objective of the tournament is to develop athletics and to also serve as a talent identification for the various schools.

“We feel that those athletes that are showing talent should be further nurtured and developed towards eventually making the EL district, Buffalo City Metro or even the Eastern Cape athletics team,” explained Adams.

“A number of athletes over the weekend showed that they have what it takes to perform at the next level.”

Alphendale will now hold the bragging rights for another year and the other schools involved will need to work extremely hard to gear themselves to take another run in the tournament next year.

Alphendale will however be keen to keep up their dominance for years to come.

“I expect next year’s competition to be very competitive again because I know that the other schools will want to get their hands on the trophy,” admitted Adams.

“So we are really looking forward to the next meet.”
