Alfred Nzo ANCYL backs Mabuyane

- By ASANDA NINI

THE ANC Youth League in the Alfred Nzo region which was recently disbanded by the league’s provincial task team (PTT) wants sitting ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane to take over as chairman.

They also want ANC national treasurer Zweli Mkhize to remain in the top six because he had helped the region with 1 000 T-shirts and promotional material.

Their support for Mabuyane is against the PTT’s decision to support current chairman Phumulo Masualle to run for a third term.

They want Masualle to join the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) after the party’s much-anticipated national elective conference in December.

Making their pronouncement last month, the PTT said they preferred Masualle because under his leadership there had been stability in both the provincial ANC structures and in government.

The Alfred Nzo regional structure is one of the five provincial regions disbanded by the Mziwonke Ndabeni-led PTT last month.

However, Mabuyane last weekend wrote a letter to all party structures telling them that the provincial ANC leadership had resolved not to recognise the league’s PTT or their decision to disband the five league regions, including Buffalo City, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and Amathole.

Mabuyane said the disbanded structures were to remain in office until an appeal by the disbanded ANCYL provincial executive committee has been finalised by the ANC NEC.

Mabuyane’s letter provoked a verbal sniping from the PTT’s coordinator Ntombikayise Mnyengeza, who said the mother body had no place in dictating how the league conducted its affairs as they were an autonomous structure.

Alfred Nzo’s regional chair, Nelson Xolo, yesterday told the Dispatch they felt Mabuyane was “more than ready” to take over the reins from Masualle.

Xolo said the ANC and its structures in the province “has been relatively stable” since Mabuyane assumed the provincial secretary’s position in 2009.

“In the two consecutive terms he has been in office, ANC regions have improved in terms of reducing factionalism and all forms of gatekeeping. “Hence we are of the view that he is ready to take over the reins,” Xolo said.

The region whose planned elective conference last weekend was disrupted amid violent clashes and shooting between warring factions, also called for ANCYL national president Collen Maine, Mkhize and Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza to be considered for the ANC's top six positions in December.

Xolo’s structure also called for the retention of the Alfred Nzo regional leadership when the ANC in the region goes to its own elective conference in few months’ time, saying they have kept stability in the area and thus should continue with their good work. —
