Myeki hopes to extend form at Border champs

- By ROSS ROCHE

TOP Border women golfers Zethu Myeki and Demi Flanagan will spearhead the local challenge in the 2017 Border Championships teeing off this morning.

Myeki and Flanagan have been Border’s best golfers over the last couple of years and they are expected to be the best chance of having a home winner.

Last year’s champ Azelia Meichtry won’t be back to defend here title and thus a new or returning champion will be crowned.

Myeki will be eager to keep her impressive run in the competition going after she triumphed in the 2015 edition and finished third last year.

She is coming into the tournament in good form after she ended as runnerup at the Eastern Province Champs earlier this week, tying for first but being beaten on the first play-off hole.

“I am looking forward to the tournament. I have just come back from the EP Champs and I am happy with my form at the moment,” said Myeki.

“I don’t want to put pressure on myself. I am just going to play my game and see how it progresses.

“I don’t want to get overconfident so I will just be focusing on my shots and keeping calm so that I do my best.”

Flanagan has yet to triumph in the Border strokeplay but has always been among the top players – finishing fourth last year and runner-up to Myeki in 2015.

“I want to win obviously but there are some good players taking part so the competition is going to be tough,” said Flanagan.

“It is our home tournament, so it is nice to know the course and I have course knowledge here and hopefully that will help me do well.”

Flanagan is, however, a three time winner of the Border Closed Match Play event and she will be eager to reclaim her crown after losing it to Myeki last year.

On the strokeplay side there will be a host of strong golfers going for the title, led by Woo-Ju Son.

Larissa du Preez, Switzerland’s Cloe Grand, Chante van Zyl, Bianca Wernich, Brittney-Fay Berger, Tara Griebenouw and Crystal Beukes will also be ones to watch over the weekend.

The action gets under way from 7am this morning and continues until tomorrow, with the prize giving expected to start just after 3pm.

The Border match play then takes centre stage on Monday and Tuesday.
