Chippa move welcomed
I JUST cannot keep quiet about the good gesture shown by Chippa United in bringing some of their matches to the second largest township, Mdantsane (aka Mdasby).
I am also giving the thumbs-up to the Executive Mayor of Buffalo City Metro, Xola Pakati, for the sterling role in trying to prepare our stadium named after the businessperson, Sisa Dukashe.
It is a stadium with good and bad memories. It was a good place for our late boxing champions HappyBoy Mgxaji, Mzukisi Skweyiya, Mazwayi Biyana, Zweli Ngcongolo, Hawk, Ncita, Beast, Bungu, etcetera. And how can I forget boxing administrators such as tata DV Mapisa.
The bad memories stem from Ciskei soldiers brutalising and killing innocent activists.
It has been so good to have watched the current African champions (Sundowns) playing right before our eyes (against Chippa) .
But I wish to challenge BCM to ensure that the drainage system is up to scratch. We were nearly disgraced by the waterlogged field which was visibly muddy in front of multitudes of South Africans, some who were in the stadium, and others watching the game on television.
I also wish to challenge Chippa United to ensure that security is beefed-up and there are enough police to avoid what happened at Tshwane Stadium recently (I don’t want to mention the 6-0 saga).
Ensure also that you generate interest among our communities by taking the teams to our shopping centres – Highway and the Mdantsane Mall – and even have the hosting team and visiting teams engage in public workouts. Last but not least, both BCM and Chippa United must ensure they are contributing to the development of football in this township. I hope the chairman of Chippa United, Chippa Mpengesi will continue saying: “this is your homecoming in Mdantsane”. Please can you tell us where were you staying, which team you played for, and around which years did you play? Hahaaaaaaa! — Vukile Maki, Mdantsane
