Rebel councillors to face music

- By ZINE GEORGE

TOMORROW is D-Day for the 21 BCM rebel councillors who voted against the ruling party caucus decision to present their side of the story.

This after the provincial executive committee (PEC) decided the group should be charged for defying party orders.

The group include deputy mayor Zoliswa Matana, Mandela memorial funds accused Sindiswa Gomba, Crosby Kolela, Gwebile Gosani, Ayanda Mapisa and head of corporate services Sindile Toni.

They were found to have voted with opposition parties in council, who preferred Nonceba Mbali-Majeng as acting municipal manager instead of the ANC’s choice of Ncumisa Sdukwana.

Other councillors implicated are: Pumla Yenana-Nonjiwu, Senduku Maphuka, Zandisile Tokwe, Peter Kiki, Ntukulana Ncotela, Mawethu Marata, Sindiswa Skepe, Ntombekhaya Ntshebe, Nceba Kilmani, Gideon Norexe, Mzukisi Relu, Vuyani Peter, Nokuphumla Gamnca, Bongani Dyonase and Mzukisi Relu.

Health MEC and ANC PEC member Dr Pumza Dyantyi will chair the committee, as head of the provincial disciplinary committee (PDC), while Mzuyanda Sokujika has been asked to recuse himself from the committee as he is likely to be called in as a witness.

This is because he briefed the ANC caucus in preparation for the council meeting at which the group defied the party.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday that “yes, the DC will go ahead on Sunday”.

If found guilty, at least two of the councillors face being demoted from their senior positions in council.

These include Matana and Toni. They, as well as Gomba, also serve as regional executive committee members of Dr WB Rubusana.

When the group defied the party last month, Mabuyane said it was agreed the BCM ANC caucus must “restore maximum unity and cohesion”. At the last council meeting, the ANC caucus voted in unison and appointed Bob Naidoo as acting municipal manager. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
