Fiery Romans whirl it up

- By NAMHLA MBONGENDLU

EAST London Netball Zone League games lit up Ham’s Club once again this weekend as the Romans thrashed WSU with a whopping 31-19 win.

This round follows last weekend’s distateful 80-1 defeat of the WSU Butterworth A team by the Aloes men’s side.

The Romans’ dominance of the game was evident from the very beginning, scoring two goals within the first two minutes of the game.

After a not-so-good season last year, the Romans A are back – more fired up than ever before to claim their rightful place in the league.

Romans goal attack Lelethu Sentse did a splendid job as she scored the majority of goals in the match and led her team to victory.

Meanwhile, the Ravens A team showed off their formation when they beat the Frere Hospital team, the Cascades.

While the women in pink and grey may have managed to clear their names in last week’s round when they beat the MBSA team in a thrilling 35-20 match, the team unfortunately failed dismally to do the same against the women in navy who proved just what they are in the league for when defeating their opponents 39-17.

This was Ravens’ second win as both the A and B teams played well last weekend with the A team beating defending champs Spiders 53-36 and the B team beating Romans B by one goal in 25-24 match

In a different court, the Aloes men’s side dominated the Aliens when the two went head-to-head and this saw the Aliens being massacred by an eyebrow-raising 74-14.

East London Netball Association (ELNA) public relations officer Nadia Foslara said she was quite surprised by the way the Aloes men’s side are so dominant in this women’s game.

Foslara added it will be difficult for the A teams playing against the men’s Aloes as they started the season on a high, referring to last week’s game.

Foslara further said the teams who were average last year, have really pulled out all the stops and have stepped up their game technique and are playing good ball.

While Romans A team may have won their game, their B team had to suffer a defeat from the Buffalo City Municipality team. The women in royal blue walked off being quite defeated having to endure a 33-20 loss by BCM.
