- By MALIBONGWE DAYIMANI

TRIBUTES poured in yesterday for the late mother of Eastern Premier and SACP leader Phumulo Masualle, Mama Caroline Deneo Masualle, who died at the age of 89 after a long illness.

Masualle had been hospitalised at Frere Hospital after she suffered a stroke.

Provincial government spokesman Sonwabo Mbananga said Masualle suffered a stroke which forced her to visit the hospital frequently followed by further complications in her health.

“While undergoing rehabilitative treatment, following the stroke, Mama Masualle experienced further complications resulting in her latest hospitalisation at Frere Hospital where she was receiving treatment.”

According to Mbananga, the Eastern Cape government directorgeneral Marion Mbina-Mthembu, has on behalf of the entire Eastern Cape government, expressed sadness and conveyed her condolences to the Masualle family.

Mbananga said the provincial cabinet, legislature and leadership of the ANC in the province and staff of the Office of the Premier were earlier informed of the passing on of premier Masualle’s mother.

Mbananga said details of the funeral and memorial service would be made after consultation with the family.

The SA Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape has also conveyed their condolences to their provincial chairman and central committee member Phumulo Masualle on the death of his mother.

SACP provincial spokesman Siyabonga Mdodi said: “We received the sad news of the passing of the mother to comrade Phumulo Masualle. We convey our heartfelt condolences to comrade Phumulo Masualle and his family. As the SACP, we wish them strength during this difficult period. We share the pain they are going through.”

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said: “We are saddened by the loss and the entire movement mourns her departure but also celebrates a life well-lived. We appreciate her contribution to the struggle for liberation by donating her own kids to the ANC.

“We are comforted by the fact that she leaves behind a lasting legacy in our province because not every parent can give birth to a premier.

“We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and the ANC as a whole, wanga uThixo angabapha amandla (may God give them strength.)” —
