Rugby bosses target new fans

- RUGBY

on die-hard supporters when summertime Pro14 rugby arrives at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

There could also be a tug-ofwar between cricket and rugby chiefs to see who can entice the most fans as the traditional seasons for the sports overlap.

This year the Kings, will be playing Pro14 matches in November, December and January at a time when the cricket season down the road at St George’s Park is in full swing.

Ahead of the Pro14 kick-off today, Kings chiefs operating officer Charl Crous addressed what some might see as a clash of interests.

“In South Africa there is the new international Global T20 league and the fixtures are overlapping a little. But we do not see any concerns really,” Crous said.

“Super Rugby is also played in summer. It commences at the end of February and the only difference is we will playing in January, November and December. Usually there are no games then because it is the end of season.

“So usually it is cricket time and guys get their sunscreen out and go a watch a game of cricket. Now it is time to go to the stadium and go and watch a rugby match, That will be unique.

“We looking forward to that and pitching it and having that test with our supporters and try and few news things and market rugby in a new format.

“Also to engage with nontraditional supporters to the stadium with a new product and new activations.

“We need to go into new markets, get people who don’t normally come to come to the games to come and be interested and find something to entice them to come and have a great game day experience. That is what it is about.’’
