AFTER years of being featured in other people’s music, Eastern Cape vocalist Prince Raven Ortega is ready to launch his music career with the release of his new single, Wena Wedwa.

The Port Elizabeth-born artist moved to Johannesburg last year to pursue his love for music.

Prince Raven Ortega, whose real name is Mzamo Myeki, said the road to finally recording his music had not been easy.

“When I first moved to Johannesburg I had a plan but it didn’t work out. I found myself staying in some of the abandoned buildings around the city and working as a security guard but I knew things were not always going to be like that,” said Myeki.

The 30-year-old said his love for music kept him going even during those tough times. “Music has always been a sign of hope for me. This is the only thing I have held on to and I can’t wait for people to enjoy my music,” he said.

An encounter with his now manager, Siya Belu saw him leave his job as a security guard to focus on what he loves.

“Siya was busy in studio with Mr Luu and MFK whom I know from back in Port Elizabeth. I also jumped in the song and since then things have changed for me. He wanted to see where I stay and I took him there because I was not ashamed,” he said, adding that things were looking better for him and he was hopeful for the future. Myeki is now signed under Melodi Music.

“Moving to Johannesburg as a musician is not easy. You don’t get here and see things happening for you, especially when you don’t know anyone. You must be prepared to start from the bottom to see your dreams become a reality,” he said.

Myeki said he has worked with the likes of Vetkuk vs Mahoota, Heavy K, Point 5, Mr Luu and MSK, Sdudla to name a few.

“I remember my first encounter with Heavy K, it was in Port Elizabeth and he wanted me to sing on a beat that he had. Back then I was big in hip-hop music and wasn’t about house music. After much convincing I decided to do it,” he said.

Myeki said he has shared the stage with the likes of Naak Musik, 999 crew, Professor, Master P (The Soil), Morena the Squire, Stop Nontsontso and Hloni.

Myeki said he was looking forward to releasing his album next year.

“We are working on releasing the album in Easter next year. For now the focus is on spreading the music and making sure that people are getting it and are enjoying,” he said. —
