Duncan Village boxer shot in robbery

- By MESULI ZIFO

THE boxing fraternity was reeling in shock yesterday after top Duncan Village-born Cape Town-based boxer Mzuvukile Magwaca was reportedly fighting for his life in hospital after a shooting incident in the early hours of yesterday.

Magwaca was rushed to Khayelitsha hospital and later transferred to Tygerberg hospital where his condition is reportedly critical.

According to Boxing SAWestern Cape manager Mickey Klaas, Magwaca was shot in the leg by thugs who stormed into his house in Site C Khayelitsha yesterday.

“Apparently these thugs wanted to rob him of his television set but when they could not unplug it they demanded that he did it himself.

“A shooting ensued and Magwaca was shot in the knee-cap,” he said.

Magwaca’s promoter Ayanda Matiti, who had just signed the boxer under his Xaba Promotions and Events banner, could not contain his disappointment as he fumbled for answers.

“Details are still sketchy at the moment but we have been told that Magwaca is in a critical condition in hospital,” Matiti said.

Magwaca, 25, is fresh from a brilliant performance when he beat former world champion and Namibian Emmanuel Naidjala to win the IBF Intercontinental bantamweight title at Orient Theatre in East London last month.

He had been starved of fights until he joined Matiti’s promotion outfit, which gave him two fights in quick succession.

Klaas said it was still too early to ponder about Magwaca’s future in boxing due to the shooting.

“We will visit him this evening and find out the extent of his injury.”
