AMULTI-million-rand retirement development is on the cards along the East Coast Resorts Road that aims to relieve the current shortage of facilities for the elderly.

The development, Riverbend Retirement Village, will be funded by the Kaysers Beach Trust, and is to be situated on Portions 1, 51, 52 and 53 of Farm 811 located off the R102 (MR00686) road between Meisies Halt and Shafli road (DR02730), East London.

Attempts made to get comment from Kaysers Beach Trust proofed fruitless this week.

Terreco Environmental cc has been appointed by Kaysers Beach Trust to undertake the legally required application process for environmental authorisation.

According to the background information document (BID) provided by Terreco the development will consist of residential and green areas.

In a notice in the Daily Dispatch this week the environmental consultants appealed to the public to be part of the environmental impact assessment and attend a public meeting on March 5 at the Beacon Bay Library from 3pm until 5pm.

Environmentalist Mitchell Jarrett said the application process was now under way.

“The purpose of the project is to develop residential and private open space areas for the stimulation of growth in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and in particular, the Beacon Bay – Gonubie development corridor,” said Jarrett.

In the BID issued by Jarrett the proposals include the building of internal roads within the development, the provision of services such as water, electricity and sanitation as well as stormwater management incorporated in the design plans of the development.

“An integral and mandatory component of the EIA [Environment Impact Assessment] is public participation, whereby interested and affected persons and the public at large are informed of the project and afforded the opportunity to participate in the EIA process.

“The EIA regulations describe the minimum level of public involvement, including the posting of newspaper advertisements, the placing of a noticeboard(s) on site and arranging a public meeting(s),” explained Jarrett.
