Buffalo aim to surprise E C Bees

- By MFUNDO PILISO

F C Buffalo assistant coach Malusi Mxoli views their ABC Motsepe league clash against E C Bees as a David versus Goliath encounter and he said he hopes to emulate David from the Bible.

Mxoli was quick to admit their poor performance as they are currently at the basement of the log – with eight points after one win and 12 losses since the 2017-18 third-tier league commenced.

On the other hand, Bees have done well, considering their busy schedule, as they are also competing in the lucrative Nedbank Cup.

Last week they were drawn against Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 16 stage of the competition but the Premier Soccer League is yet to release the dates and venues of the matches. Bees have collected 39 points with 12 wins this season in the league.

Mxoli said he was nervous playing against a highly decorated side because, in reality, they were skating on thin ice in the league.

“If we make calculations, there’s a possibility of league survival, but then again should we fail to do well in the next games, we are likely to be relegated,” he said.

“If you remember the past three games, starting with the one against Tornado, we conceded about 15 goals. So that is an indication that we have a problem, but we didn’t just sit down and fold our hands.

“We’ve been working and trying to improve the situation we are in, especially our defence. We also tried empowering the boys tactically, so hopefully the situation on the pitch will be different from now onwards.”

Added Mxoli: “We all know the Bees are among the last 16 teams vying for the Nedbank Cup, and that gives them that tag of being Goliath.

“Us being at the bottom of the log standings, we have to take David’s name, but that can also be a strong point if you know the bible story.

“We can be dangerous, especially if the Bees become complacent, and that will be their downfall. They must bare in mind that anything can happen on the day.”
