Challenging event for worthy cause

- By BARBARA HOLLANDS

A TOUGH but fun-filled High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) day which transformed the Baysville School fields into an obstacle course for 30 teams of eager fitness enthusiasts last weekend raised R25 000 for the Loaves and Fishes Network.

The non-profit organisation trains childcarers in rural educare centres and its chairman, Brendan Connellan, who also participated in the Daleygainz HIIT day, said he was very happy with the proceeds. “We do not get government support and rely on sponsors, so this money will be used for staff salaries because operational funding is difficult to raise.”

HIIT is a training technique which uses body weight and light exercise equipment to elevate the heart rate and is a form of functional fitness, according to Connellan.

Thirty teams of four participated in the games on Saturday and got their heart rates going with events like lunge walks, slam balls, climbing walls, slip and slides, cargo net obstacles and tyre flips.

Some teams donned tutus or grass skirts to add to the fun.

Daleygainz Studio owner Dale Fraser said he had structured the day on a fitness, fun and team-building concept.

“It comes from my love of TV shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race and Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge,” said Fraser, who weighed 145kg three years ago, but is now 45kg lighter.

“As an accounting firm we are normally in grey so decided to wear colourful grass skirts and flower crowns for this event,” laughed Ian Roach of Klinkradt Chartered Accountants. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
