Choirs hit all right chords
THE East London Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod started off on a high note on Monday with sweet melodic sounds filling the Cambridge High School Hall.
Young musicians from across the province have strengthened their vocal chords and tuned their instruments for the biggest music event in the province for pupils.
Eight special mentions have been awarded thus far. A special mention reflects 90% or more.
In addition, 22 gold awards were made (reflecting a mark of 8089%).
Megan May, Lehakoe Thelejane of Cambridge High School, Shahaa Harms of Clarendon Prep School and Kian Terwin and Bomkazi Katiya of Beaconhurst High School who all participated in the vocal section, all received special mentions.
Monday evening was an exciting night for chamber choirs.
Several choirs participated in the hopes of winning the overall section.
Laerskool Grens, Cambridge Primary, Hudson Park Primary, Clarendon Primary, Beaconhurst High, Hoërskool Grens, Graeme College, Selborne College, Clarendon High School and Cambridge High School chamber choirs all sang their hearts out for adjudicators Jo-Nette le Kay and Andre Serfontein.
In the end, Selborne Primary’s Only Boys Aloud chamber was awarded a Special Mention award together with the medal for the winning junior choir.
The medal for the best high school chamber choir was shared between Clarendon High’s De Novo Serenata and Cambridge High’s Canto Armonico.
This week music lovers can expect the following programme:
● The Junior Primary Choral Morning (May 9);
● High School Choral evening (May 9);
● Junior Primary Marimba bands (May 10);
● Senior Primary Marimba Bands (Selborne College); and
● The High School Marimba Bands (May 10).
