Talent in need of the royal touch
THE country’s lone promoter from royal family stock, Ntsika Sigcawu, is hoping to unearth yet another world champion in the Mbhashe Municipality region.
Sigcawu will put his efforts into action when he organises a tournament at Dutywa Town Hall tomorrow evening.
Trading under Eyesizwe Promotions, Sigcawu has left the comfort of the royal house in Nqadu Great Place where his brother Zwelonke Sigcawu is the king, to try to help kids to get involved in sport.
His promotions company is renowned for forging partnerships with various municipalities in the Transkei region to organise boxing tournaments and help unearth untapped talent.
“It pains me when I see talented youngsters unable to showcase their talent because of lack of opportunities,” he says.
“This is why I decided to do something to give them a platform to display their God-given talent and make something of it.
“Through our efforts, some of them have gone on to make it big in their chosen careers but we are not resting on our laurels because there is so much that can be done.
“As struggle icon Nelson Mandela once said, sport is not only a unifier of different races but also an effective tool of service delivery.
“So many kids in rural areas have fallen on the wayside some succumbing to unsavoury activities such as alcohol and drugs when they could have shaped their life better had they been given opportunities.”
Sigcawu has identified that shortfall and is doing something about it by giving kids in the opportunity to share bills with the well-known boxers in the land.
It was through these kinds of tournaments that led to the emergence of current world female boxing champion Bukiwe Nonina, who hails from Dutywa.
Although now fighting out of Limpopo, Nonina was brought to fight at home and Willowvale, which also falls under Mbashe Municipality.
Nonina is now the lone world champion from the municipality.
Tomorrow two boxers from the municipality Mawande Mbusi and Nohlanga Kanzi will be attempting to write their own boxing scripts.
Mbusi, who hails from Esinqumeni village, will face Sakhumzi Ngqakata of Cape Town in a featherweight bout.
Nkanzi on the other hand will also be involved in a featherweight clash against Simpiwe Mayeza of Ilitha.
The main bout will take place between old war-horses Dalisizwe Komani and Mbulelo Nxazonke who engage one another in a flyweight duel. —
