Montsho is the real deal

- By CHRIZELDA KEKANA

EVEN though most of Mmabatho Montsho’s fans still call her Lumka stemming from her Generation’s fame‚ the actress has spread her wings into directing and investing in telling authentic stories through film. And her 10-part web series was a wakeup call for people that only saw her as an actress.

The series‚ titled Women on Sex‚ had women from different walks of life talk about their sexuality and sexual experiences. It was recorded in 2015 and also grew Montsho’s passion to direct.

Montsho explained what sparked her curiosity to begin with.

“I had and still have a lot of questions about sex and its relationship with everything that we do. For instance‚ even when I’m on set and directing‚ sex has something to do with it. Am I going to get sexually harassed as some point or not? What is the relationship between being in control of my body and being in a certain space. I had too many questions about it.”

She said it left her with many more questions which she still explores.

“I realised that some of the things that we go through are so similar and‚ at the same time‚ they are so different. And the conversations can go on and on and on.”

Montsho also recently shared her passion for painting. Her painting of the “Women’s Manyano jacket” in honour of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela left many art lovers in awe.

“I tend to paint when I am sad‚ or when I need to remember who I am. There is something healing about images. Something healing about the process of arranging the strokes of a brush on a canvas. The true blessing is to be able to share whatever it is that heals me with others‚” she wrote on her Instagram. —
