Not yet the end of the road for Makazole

- MESULI ZIFO

Talented yet under-performing Mdantsane boxer Makazole Tete may not retire soon as many critics are suggesting.

Calls for Makazole, the older brother of WBO world bantamweight champion, Zolani, to quit the game reached a crescendo after yet another disappointing performance at the recent Mthatha tournament.

He was soundly outboxed by the limited but more motivated Namibian Jonas Matheus in their IBO International bantamweight title clash. Tete did not look interested in the fight and he allowed the Namibian to fire home a barrage of blows while simply covering up against the ropes.

Makazole was released by Xaba Promotions after being fed up with his below-par performance amidst ballooning weight problems. He returned to All Winners Club where his sibling is training under manager Mla Tengimfene. Makazole was last at his best while under Tengimfene’s tutelage and his return to him invoked hopes of him regaining his form. But he ran to his third defeat in a similar fashion to the way he lost to Gideon Buthelezi in an IBO junior-bantamweight title clash while his other loss was a brutal knockout at the hands of Filipino Jonas Sultan.

However, Tengimfene is not ready to throw in the towel on the boxer as yet, even though Makazole had publicly expressed his disdain for boxing with his passion lying in choral music and his own choir.

Tengimfene said it was too early to pronounce Makazole’s future now. “We will sit down with him and discuss his future,” he said. “I am not ready to give up on him as yet. I believe he still has something to offer in the ring.”

Meanwhile Zolani’s career is soaring to new heights having just entered the lucrative World Boxing Super Series.

It was also revealed that the tournament that was to feature two East London boxers, Xolisani Ndongeni and Xolani Mcotheli in Soweto last Friday was postponed to August 11.
