Selborne look to extend their dominating season when they take on Queen’s College

- ROSS ROCHE rossr@dispatch.co.za

Cracking school rugby action is on the cards this weekend with some exciting derbies set to be battled out across the Border region.

A number of games will be return fixtures, with teams meeting each other for the second time this season.

Arguably the biggest of those games is set to be the Classic Clash between Selborne College and Queen’s College at Selborne.

Despite the daunting task of taking on the rampant Selborne team on their home turf, Queen’s will be desperate to put in a much better performance than in the first game in Queenstown, where Selborne absolutely blew the hosts away 54-0.

In all it has not been a great season for Queen’s. They have lost 11 games, while winning just four, and have only beaten Grens, twice, and Stirling on the local front.

Their last match was, however, a 41-17 win over Grens, and hopefully the holiday break will have done them good and they can give Selborne a run for their money.

The hosts will, however, be overwhelming favourites to continue their winning ways, and will be eyeing another big win over Queen’s.

Selborne has been in scintillating form this season, with 12 wins against just three losses, and are currently on a four-match winning streak, having brushed aside Hudson Park 5410 over the past weekend.

They are unbeaten against teams from the Eastern Cape, having dispatched other College rivals in Dale and St Andrews, and most of their first team squad was part of the victorious Border Craven Week team that finished unbeaten.

The Classic Clash kicks off at 2.40pm on Saturday and will be live on Super Sport 10.

A big co-ed battle will also be on the cards as Hudson Park High school take on close rivals Stirling at Hudson.

It has always been a fierce rivalry between the two schools, with Hudson dominating over the last few years.

In the match earlier this year at Stirling, Hudson was again too good, claiming a 23-6 victory.

They will be favourites again on their home turf and will be eager to bounce back from the Selborne defeat.

Stirling will be desperate to pick up a win over Hudson and will hope that, although this is their first game after the holiday break, they will hit the ground running.

Dale College will welcome St Andrews to King William’s Town for what should be an entertaining derby.

Dale have had an up and down season, winning eight games, while losing seven, and will have to be at their very best if they are to challenge St Andrews.

They will want to pick up the momentum gained in their last two games before the break, where they claimed big wins over Muir (62-7) and Cambridge (62-22).

St Andrews should, however, be favourites, despite playing in King.

St Andrews have lost twice this season, against Selborne, and then the past weekend against Marlow.

Another interesting matchup will see Cambridge host Port Rex in their derby day.

Both teams have had their moments over the season. However, it was Cambridge who managed a 36-10 win in their first clash.

Port Rex will be eager to upset the odds, but Cambridge will be favourites, with them in good form on a three-match winning run, and they will hope to ride the back of vocal home support to claim a good win over the visitors.
