Attracted by the school’s 124year history and its vision, James Hough took over as the Kingswood College headmaster last month.

Although his appointment was announced only last week, 45-year-old Hough reported for duty at the top Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) school at the beginning of July.

Before this appointment, Hough was principal at New Hanover Preparatory School in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and before that, deputy principal at Cowan House, also in KZN.

With over 20 years of teaching experience, Hough said he was honoured to be appointed as the boarding school’s new principal.

He jumped at the opportunity of contributing to Kingswood’s history.

“Their vision was very attractive and also I was very excited to work with the pupils.

“The school has a rich history behind it and I wanted to be part of it,” he told the Daily Dispatch on Tuesday.

Hough heaped praise on the staff.

“In my short time here already, I can clearly see that I have the privilege of leading a group of dedicated and highly skilled teachers in a wonderful environment to grow children,” he said.

“At Kingswood College we do and always will aspire to unlock the potential of each individual child and develop a want and excitement for lifelong learning and, at the same time, focus on character formation, and intellectual and emotional growth.

“We must create an environment where flames are being kindled and fed, enabling children to become curious and confident about exploring, and where they are inspired to achieve their own personal excellence,” Hough said.
