MTV in East London looking for a star

East London is one of two cities that will be hosting this year’s MTV Base VJ Search, and this Saturday hopefuls will get a chance to dazzle the judges with their skills.

In the past MTV held auditions in Port Elizabeth, but this year they’ve decided to switch things up. Auditions will be held in East London and the second city is Johannesburg.

Auditions kick off on Saturday at the East London Golf Club, between 9am and 4pm.

The crews will be looking for East London’s top two stars, with enough confidence, vibrancy and talent to make it into the top 10.

Celebrity judges include funnyman Thomas Gumede from Ridiculousness Africa, You Got Got comedic star Toll Ass Mo, and music personality Kelly Khumalo.

Last year’s winner, Tshego Koke, said winning the presenter search has been a learning curve for him.

“The journey has been beautiful. I have learned a lot about myself, my craft and the industry. There are a lot of things that happen in the industry. Others can suck you in and you need to be careful,” he said, adding that he will always be grateful for the opportunity.

Koke said those who would be auditioning on Saturday should not try to imitate anyone else in the industry.

“I know this is something that is said a lot, but it’s important to be yourself. You need to be true to yourself. The industry is looking for a personality that hasn’t been seen before. Be confident and be willing to learn. That’s all there is,” he said.

The 27-year-old said the journey has been about learning and growth. “You must always stay hungry. The winner’s life will change, no doubt. There is a lot of exciting stuff on the way for them,” he said.

Koke will be staying with MTV for another year. “What’s nice is that they do not just dump the previous winner.

“I will stay for another year and will be working on a lot of exciting projects. I will also be focusing on building my brand,” he said.

The official afterparty to celebrate the East London leg will be held at Buccaneers on Sunday. The afterparty will feature performances by D J Tira, OkMalumKoolKat, Lerato Kganyago and D J Anda, among many.

The winner of the VJ Search will get a 12-month contract with MTV Base, an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Thailand compliments of Breezer, a year supply of fruity Breezers to keep life colourful, and a brand new Fiat Tipo worth over R300,000. Audition queues open at 9am, but hopefuls are encouraged to get to the venue before that.
