Time for hard truths
As we march towards regional elective conferences this weekend, as ANC members, leaders and, most importantly, delegates we need to assess the performance of those who were given the opportunity to lead our municipalities.
These conferences come two years after the 2016 local government elections. Self-examination is key. Let’s remember that we became complacent to a point where we believed our own propaganda that we would rule for eternity.
We need to look one another in the face and tell ourselves the whole truth, no matter how uncomfortable. Amilcar Cabral said: “Hide nothing from the masses of our people. Tell no lies. Expose lies whenever they are told. Mask no difficulties, mistakes, failures. Claim no easy victories.”
We must hide nothing from the masses and indeed we should punish selfish so-called leaders who are hell-bent on leading with only one purpose – control of state material and machinery.
It is in our hands to elect leaders who have the interest of the ANC and people at heart, and to ensure no region elects selfserving leaders. The ANC needs leaders with a deep heart for the people, not personal gain. We must crush factionalism, patronage and crippling ill-discipline. Let’s dedicate these regions to Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu. Let’s elect leaders, not cheaters. Let’s elect people who respect their membership oaths and will defend the unity and integrity of the ANC. – Viwe Sidali, ANC Mzwanele Fazzie branch, former ANCYL REC member , Duncan Village
