Greenpoint U19 Girls hit the jackpot, while Yellow Sands hosts the ever-popular Lilyfontein Adventure race

It was a historic year for the Greenpoint Secondary School U19 girls team as they recently claimed their first ever league title, after defeating arch-rivals John Bisseker 3-2 in a breathtaking final at the Bunkers Hill fields.

It was the perfect way for the team to cap off a superb unbeaten season, where they swept all before them on their way to their maiden title.

During the course of the season Greenpoint defeated the likes of Academy of Learning, Science College, Hudson Park, Unathi, Ebenezer and the Centre of Excellence, before coming out on top in the all-important final. One of the highlights was a 14-0 hammering of Science College, in which sensation Chloe Rulf, 14, bagged nine goals. According to coach Michaela Dickson, other than the prolific Rulf, a host of other girls impressed over the campaign, including Anam Jikijela, Lukhanyiso Mpumlwana, Kaylim Francis and captain Sinovuyo Somniso.

“Despite our team comprising of mostly junior players, we managed to defy all odds against the most competitive teams,” said Dickson.

“The girls played with a lot of heart and took every game in their stride.”

The schools soccer convener Rajen Packery was also elated with the result, explaining what a special moment it was for the school as it meant that all of their main teams had managed to pick up a major title.

“This was the only ELCHISSA title to elude us over the years,” said Packery.

“Our U19 boys had won the title for the past four years, our U17s the title over the past three years and our U15s the title last year.

“Our U15 boys lost on penalties in the final and our U19 boys lost in the semifinals this year, however the triumph of our girls more than made that up.”

In all it has been a great 2018 for the Greenpoint girls team, and they will be eager to defend their title next year, while the boys will be hoping to reclaim their respective titles again in 2019.
