EC Hawks boss calls it a day
Resignation follows year after suspension over sex scandal, drawing salary
Troubled Eastern Cape Hawks head Major-General Nyameko Nogwanya has resigned.
He has been in the post since January 7 2016.
His resignation comes more than a year after he was suspended on August 11 2017 over sexual harassment charges.
He was suspended by thenacting head Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata over allegations that he sexually harassed provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni.
Contacted for comment on Tuesday, Nogwanya said he was only prepared to talk about the resignation in the media once all legal processes around his exit had been finalised.
Nogwanya further said: “I reserve my right to privacy as I am now a private figure, I am no longer bound by holding public office.”
In an e-mailed response to the Dispatch on Tuesday, Nogwanya’s employers, the directorate for priority crime investigation (DPCI/Hawks) would not be drawn into discussing the resignation either.
Hawks national spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said: “Kindly note that the matter you refer to in your inquiry is being dealt with internally as it is an internal matter.”
The Dispatch reported in January that, despite the Hawks lifting the suspension in November 2017, Nogwanya was ordered to stay at home while continuing to draw his R1.8m annual salary.
Popcru called the move a waste of money.
Nogwanya, an advocate with a master’s degree in law, has 23 years of experience in the SAPS legal services department. He also had a stint as acting provincial commissioner of Mpumalanga.
