Escaped murderer nabbed in Mthatha

Eastern Cape police have rearrested a dangerous murderer who escaped from a maximum security prison in May.

According to police spokespers­on Captain Dineo Koena, police from the Mthatha Flying Squad and cluster were informed that 28-year-old Mandisi Makanda, who was serving a life sentence for murder, was seen at the Circus Triangle bus rank in Mthatha on Wednesday afternoon.

number scratched off as well as two magazines and 14 rounds of ammunition.

Makanda escaped with his brother, Simphiwe Makanda, and two other inmates after shooting and injuring a prison guard at the Rooigrond prison in Mahikeng, North West. The four disarmed the warder, shot him and sped off in a stolen prison vehicle driven by Mandisi.

Simphiwe was rearrested in September.

Mandisi is due to appear in court soon.
