Tinkler would love Chiefs scalp

- VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

Chippa United have not won a match in three consecutive fixtures in the Absa Premiership and coach Eric Tinkler hopes his team will turn matters around when they battle Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday (6pm).

Despite an improvement in their performance the Port Elizabeth side have been struggling to convert their chances into goals.

Their winless run in the league has seen the team drop in position and are now languishing near the bottom of the log.

Despite Tinkler’s best efforts, the results have not been forthcoming.

“Unfortunately playing good football does not guarantee you points,” said the former Bafana Bafana star.

“We need to start winning at the same time, but I think we deserved a little bit from what we have got in the last few games. Hopefully things will turn to the good.”

The Chilli Boys last tasted victory in October when they beat Free State Stars 1-0.

The win was followed by three consecutive defeats to Highlands Park, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Tinkler said a win against Chiefs would be vital in boosting the team’s spirit.

“The team is looking good. We have put together a competitive team and obviously we have to collect three points on Saturday against Kaizer Chiefs.

“We have studied them [Chiefs]. We have looked at where their strength lie and where their weaknesses lie. I think technically we have prepared ourselves as well as we possibly can and now we must go out there and do it on the field of play,” he said.

“A win on Saturday is very important to boost the morale and the confidence of the team going forward.

“It’s quite [unfortunate] at the moment with the team we are only playing one game every two weeks and there is another Fifa break coming up. We try and gain that momentum especially after you have put on good performance as we did against Sundowns.

“But, now you want to be playing regularly and that unfortunately has not been happening. You have to kick-start everything again.

“Hopefully, we can put on the same performance that we put on against Sundowns and if we can do that I think we stand a good chance of getting something out of the game against Chiefs.

“We have toned things down this week. We have had one session a day, dropped the intensity of the session a little bit and we have focused more on the technical side of things.”
