Mthatha adds one more flight
From Monday, flying from Mthatha to Johannesburg will cost between R480 and R1,200 a single trip.
There will now be two airlines operating on the Johannesburg to Mthatha route, with SA Express added on.
This was announced by Eastern Cape transport MEC Weziwe Tikana on Thursday when she said that SA Express would also service the route.
SA Express will offer flights from Monday to Sunday with the exception of Saturdays.
SA Express spokesperson Madikwe Mabotha said the cheapest flight would cost around R480 while the expensive one would cost about R1,200 a single trip, based on the size of the aircraft. Prices exclude airport taxes. Airlink was the first airline to service the route following the construction of a larger runway to accommodate larger aircraft as part of a R700m revamp of the Mthatha Airport five years ago.
Tikana described the move as a positive for the transport business in the Eastern Cape.
“It’s also good news for the economic prospects of this region,” she said.
SA Express would initially operate a daily flight from O R Tambo International Airport with the intention of increasing frequency early in the new year. However, that would be subject to demand.
