Simthembile Feti of King William’s Town has desperately been looking for a job for the past two years after attaining his BSc in information technology (IT).

Feti, 26, matriculated from Cathcart High School in 2011 and went on to pursue a national diploma in IT at the Pearson Institute of Higher Learning in Pretoria.

He completed the course in 2015 and applied for a BSC in IT at the same institution, from which he graduated in 2017.

Since then, Feti has been actively looking for a job in his field. “I knew before matriculating that I wanted to do IT. I’m intrigued by technology and its development so I didn’t have a problem choosing a course to do in college. I have a year’s experience in software development attained from Eskom.”

Feti is now in the final months of a one-year internship at the State Information Technology Agency which includes application development functional support, import data and business analysis.

“People looking to pursue a career in IT should know it’s a demanding course. In order to do well, one needs to be a hard worker and very dedicated.

“University is challenging. We had a software development module that was more challenging than the others and yet it was the only one in which we spent little time with the lecturer. I look back now and wish we could have had more time for it.”

Feti says due to financial constraints, he had to take a gap year but that did not deter him from going back and catching up on lost time. He said in that year, he and a friend developed an application that people could use when they had problems with computers and other gadgets.

“All one had to do was to send your location and describe the problem and we would get it fixed.” But the project failed and the friends had to abort the software.

“Looking for a job has been frustrating and at times made me anxious. However, I do not lose hope.

“I am a dedicated, driven and hard-working person and I am hopeful that I will find employment soon.”

Feti said with his IT qualification, he wanted to focus on software development.

“It’s what I have always had an interest in.”
