Bucks head the pack at summit

- MFUNDO PILISO mfundop@dispatch.co.za

The ABC Motsepe League logstandings saw Mthatha Bucks reaching the summit for the first time this season after having experienced a bit of turbulence during their take-off.

This after the former National First Division side managed to salvage three points after a narrow 1-0 win against The Guys at Mthatha Stadium – a result that saw Bucks collecting 40 points.

Bucks, who had to scramble for a team when the season began, are now leading the pack with only two points and they will need to keep up their momentum if they want to solidify their position at the summit.

In the runners-up position there’s Tornado, at third place is PE Stars and Sibanye is at fourth – all on 38 points.

Tornado were outplayed by PE Stars at Sisa Dukashe Stadium after failing to tame the Port Elizabeth outfit throughout the game.

Tshepo Motsoeneng’s charges failed to find an equalising goal to at least secure a point, but Amandla “Amigo” Mrhwebi and Ruan “Roro” Dikela, both former Tornado players, were pushing all the right buttons on behalf of PE Stars.

Dikela, who left Tornado last season, said it felt good scoring against his former side.

“We had to adapt to the rough surface of Sisa Dukashe, but I’m glad everything went well for us because we’ve all been waiting for this game.

“And thanks to my teammates for putting up a fight, but this game is over now and we look forward to the next game [against Peace Makers],” said Dikela.

“I’m happy I scored because many people this side thought I was down and out, but the old me is back. I’m the top goalscorer at PE Stars with 13 goals now and that’s a very good feeling.

“The coaching staff at Stars really believes in me and that gives me confidence every time I play and now I’m looking forward to scoring more goals for my team and hopefully we’ll win the league.”

Mrhwebi, who also left Stars last season, teamed up well with Dikela and said they had a good run against one of the most respected teams in the third-tier league.

“We knew coming here would be difficult because everyone was expecting Tornado to give us a run for our money,” said Mrhwebi.

“The one thing that worked to our advantage is scoring early goals and then we continued playing our game.”
