Uphill poll slog for Myanmar’s Suu Kyi
New political groups are emerging to contest Myanmar’s next election in 2020, aiming to challenge the hegemony of national civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, weakened by escalating ethnic conflicts and slowing economic growth. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won only seven of 13 seats in November byelections, as regional and armylinked parties gained favour. At stake is Myanmar’s transition to democracy.
