Old Boys serve up the aces to clinch singles

- MAUD THORNE

The Old Boys A team beat Beacon Bay A in a scintillating display of tennis to round off the inaugural Buffalo City singles league.

Beacon Bay’s Charles Wheeler finished off the league with a remarkable record of having conceded a mere three games in a total of 51. In the final encounter he proved that experience plays a big part in tennis as he defeated a younger Ryan Little of Old Boys 6-2, 6-1.

Sam Townes proved himself to be the outstanding player of the afternoon. In a hard-hitting encounter he matched Daniel Hendel shot-for-shot, eventually running out the victor at 6-2, 6-3 in their encounter.

Everything depended on the outcome of the last match of the afternoon. The Little/Townes partnership used all their experience as a couple and ran out 6-2, 6-2 winners to give Old Boys a well-deserved victory.

In the other first league encounter the Old Boys B side defeated Gonubie.

Old Boys shoe-horned their way through in both singles matches.

Jo Townes did well to beat Gareth Fray, who has represented South Africa in several veterans’ tournaments. He emerged victorious at 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.

At the same time, Seb Hensberg and Lester Barkhuysen were fighting a battle royal. Hensberg came from behind to shoe-horn his way through at 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.

The Gonubie pair proved that singles and doubles are two different games when they won the doubles 6-2, 6-1.

Represented by Marcelle Booysen and Malvory Isaacs in every fixture, Omega emerged as clear-cut winners of the B league. The only team which made inroads was the Destiny B side, which salvaged three points against them.

In the final fixture Booysen had to work hard for his 7-5, 75 victory over Siba George, while Isaacs came from behind to defeat Thabo Gwegwena 4-6, 6-4 10-5.

All hinged on the outcome of the doubles. In a nail-biting encounter, where every point counted, the Omega pair came from behind to retain their unbeaten record running out victors at 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. Detailed results: A league
